I was born and raised in rural New Mexico, on my family’s farm and ranch. Growing up in a family that had been involved in agriculture for generations greatly shaped who I am. We continue to raise show lambs, commercial sheep, show steers and commercial cattle. We also do a little farming when the rain decides to cooperate…which isn’t very often in the desert!
In high school I was active in 4-H and FFA and developed a love for judging and showing. My parents and brother were always extremely supportive and we spent crazy amounts of time together doing these activities. I was fortunate to have had the best advisor and coach for these activities that I could imagine, Jerry Franklin. His influence changed my life, taught me to believe in myself, and helped make me who I am today.
After high school, I headed to Dodge City, Kansas to judge livestock for Dodge City Community College. There, I had an opportunity to continue traveling the country evaluating livestock, but more importantly, made great friendships that will last a life time! After a year, I decided it was time to get out of Dodge and headed to Stillwater, Oklahoma.
I spent three glorious years obtaining my B.S. in Agribusiness Farm and Ranch Management at Oklahoma State University. I could not have asked for a better college experience. I refer to Stillwater as the happiest place on earth and yes, I do bleed orange! Go Pokes! While at OSU I developed an interest in law, and somehow ended up applying to law school. That began the next chapter in my life.
I attended the University of New Mexico School of Law in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I graduated this past May and passed the bar in July. I’m currently practicing law with a firm in New Mexico, and while we have some agricultural law cases, I hope to become more involved in agricultural law and policy work. I’ve learned there are too few agricultural representatives in the legal field. I do my best to represent…including wearing boots and jeans to law school, talking about preg checking cows at a weekly attorney meeting, displaying my New Mexico FFA State Star Farmer plaque in my office, and telling everyone who will listen about how important I believe family farms are to America!
I’m so excited to be a blogger for Copper West. The beautiful and creative ideas on this website are wonderful, and I hope that I can add a little New Mexico flavor that everyone will enjoy!
