DIY: Vintage Cross

On a trip to Fredericksburg, TX (a must visit quaint town – more pictures in my posts Glimpse of Texas and Texas Wishes) in March 2009 with my hubby, I fell in LOVE with an amazing cross that had random pieces of gems, costume jewelry, and other bling stuck to it and hanging off of it. It was in a unique shop and had a hefty price tag attached. This beautiful decor was in a glass case that doubled as the cashier counter, so I wasn’t able to “sneak” a picture. However, a clear visual is still in my head.

Last summer, while visiting our Texas family, John’s Nanny was convinced I’d want to add some of her gently used jewelry to my personal collection:

Nanny is the queen of costume jewelry – it’s all about quantity of bright colorful pieces in her eyes!

As soon as I laid my eyes on the 2 big bags of joy, my wheels were spinning.

Instead of wearing, I proposed that I take the remaining prized collection, that she didn’t sell in the garage sale and turn them into a craft!! Nanny was tickled.

I finally DID this craft last week, 10 months later. I broke apart and cut up the pieces I wanted to use:

John requested I model a couple pairs of clip on earrings from the collection:

Then I started hot gluing them to the wrought iron cross. I had a rough idea where I was going to put a few pieces and then I filled in the holes.

I’m thrilled with my final product!

I LOVE it.

The creation brought tears to my husband John! WOW – I never imagined that type of reaction. However, I quickly learned as he pointed to different items and went down memory lane in his mind, that this wasn’t just a craft or new doodad to fill my shelves – it meant  a lot to him. When he saw the pieces I used, he recalls his Nanny wearing every piece!

I really want to show Nanny my final product – however I’m afraid that she’ll want it!! He he… I’d be honored to let her showcase it in her home, it would be really hard for me to part with now.

Instead of throwing away your prizes in the future…you may want to consider creating something ;)

What would YOU have made with these pieces of jewelry?

Live Inspired,
Robyn
