Life in a Trailer!

June 6th, 2010 :: 6:54 pm

About 6 years ago already, I moved a mobile onto some land of my parents for me to live in while I worked on the farm. I got a really good deal on a good used mobile and have loved the location and place to live ever since.

When I bought it, I had a 5 year plan to live there… 4.5 years ago Craig moved in and we started our oilfield welding company. So we started another plan to live here for a few more years. Since having our son Sloan who is 11 months old, we have realized that space is becoming more limited…so we re-evaluated where we were at and where we want to get, and realized living cheap for a while longer is the most practical to get where we want to be!

So, we did what any other “mobile liver” does or talks about and we built an addition!  We have talked about this for a few years and by chance Craig had some time off this spring, so we started construction!

It started out Craig, me and one of the worst spring snow storms this year! Once we got the floor done we had to push on, so the weather didn’t wreck what we had finished already! Since both Craig and I like to be in charge or the boss, some things were a little challenging but we made it through and also had some great recruits that stopped by and got roped into helping. Whether it was help stand up a wall, put the roof on or something, such as my brother or dad, Randy & Ryley; a few friends and our brother-in-law John just happened to come over on a great day! lol Thanks so much!

We got it all constructed then had a tinning party! Thank goodness for the friends who popped by that day for a beer and BBQ, and ended up with a hammer or nail gun! We were very lucky to have friends who have a tin sales company, Casual Labour Metal Sales, and Lindsay came out and directed the tinning process and got it all done in 5 hrs! We picked a neutral color, knowing we weren’t really fond of our blue siding on the rest of the house.

I had a great friend Tamara come for an afternoon with her little guy Kash; her and I painted the rest of the trailer in just over 4 hours! The difference is huge in how things look! Funny, but that would have been another day Robyn and John stopped by for a visit and ended up working and babysitting! Thanks to all!

This addition will give us almost 300 sq feet more, and will be a porch, office, storage area with a wood stove in it. I think I died and went to heaven with the amount of space I now have! We will finish the inside over the summer. Right now Craig is trying his hand at being an electrician! He has one plug to the outside on and it works! Now for the rest of the wiring and here’s to hoping for no zapping!

Now to finish the inside and get finding all the right trinkets to fill it with!

Craig thinks he’s funny and walks around telling everyone about  how we have moved up in the trailer world, by building an addition. Also, that we never need to move… if we need more room, just build an addition! haha, not! Most of the year he lives in our RV where ever he is welding at, which has mostly been in Hinton for the past year. I laugh and say we really must be trailer trash because we both live in them! lol

At some point we will build a house, but for now we are very content with where were at! It is very homey and in a great location to be surrounded by family and friends.

Over this construction time, we have had so many people stop by and help us and we are so grateful, so I guess people will know who to call when they need help!

    I didn’t mind that pretty blue! But the new color looks great! Isn’t it great having so many helpful friends and neighbors to help out, it makes everything that much more special!

    welcome to my world. 4 kids in a double wide. Mostly I just wish for a basement, the shed is working fine for storage now, but I’d love to send the kids downstairs when they’re too noisy.

    We’re in the same lovely situation of living in the same yard as my in-laws. Great grandparents are on the next quarter over & aunts & uncles are all close by. We call it ‘the colony’! It really does take a village.

    We have to stay in this trailer a while longer to save for the house of my dreams, but I definitely love being close to family!

    It can be done Rayel…my sister & brother in law lived in one with 3 kids while they saved for and built their dream home. It was so worth the cramped space and headaches…their new home is GORGEOUS!! Good for you with the positive attitude!
