Top 7 at the Calgary Stampede

My TOP 7 things to do at the Calgary Stampede

1) Western Art Showcase - I LOVE this area - the ambiance is fabulous and the displays are world class. Two western inspired displays I enjoy visiting are the ones of Gena Lacoste & Shawna Whiteside (Laura shared a couple of their amazing creations with us in the Just in time for Valentines post) and another one of my favorites is JoAnne Meeker. Last year, this area was redesigned into the Western Oasis and has a wine bar in the middle! (Open all 10 days :: BMO Centre)

The fabulously decorated wine bar!

My husband John and I enjoying a glass of wine, after admiring the art we’d like to add to our home.

2) Steer Show – I was raised showing cattle and attending the Steer Show annually is a huge social opportunity for me to visit with many amazing agriculture enthusiasts. (Saturday, July 17, 2010 :: 2:30pm :: Big Top Tent)

With friends taking in the Steer Show!

3) Rodeo on the Final Sunday - the top rodeo competitors from the previous 9 days, compete for a $100,000 purse for a 1st place finish!  There is just something about standing on the hot tarmac with a cold one, watching the finals live. (Sunday, July 18, 2010 :: 1:30pm :: Grandstand)

John & I taking in the summer heat watching the rodeo last year. I’m sporting my favorite turquoise necklace from Designs by Shelagh

4) Heavy Horse World Champion Six Horse Hitch – it’s SO magical to watch the horses work together, pull the gorgeous wagons and listen to their equipment jingle and feet move along with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. (Sunday, July 11, 2010 :: 12noon :: Pengrowth Saddledome)

5) Stampede Market (Trade Show) – I enjoy browsing the displays for “prizes”. Of course I never go needing anything, however I always seem to leave with something! After browsing THIS list of 2010 Exhibitors – I’m excited to explore the offering. I look forward to visiting the Cowgirl Finesse booth and seeing what other western inspired booths are waiting for me – he he… (Open all 10 days :: BMO Centre)

Cowgirl Finesse booth last year!

6) Grandstand Show & Fireworks – the evening show is always fabulous and finishes off with a wicked fireworks show. I really enjoy music and dancing – so I like watching the performance once during the festival.

Last year’s performance featured Suzie McNeil singing Believe; appropriate for the 2010 Winter Olympics that followed a couple months later.

Ooo Aaaa…

What is your favorite part of the Calgary Stampede?

6 ) Eat a Fiddlestick - I love dessert and this just happens to be a fair favorite, I only get once a year!

7) Enjoy a Burrito - from a Mexican vendor on the midway, that has been in the exact same place, as long as I can remember! When I get to Stampede Park – I’ll update you with the name of the vendor and it’s approximate location, so you can also enjoy if you wish.

What is your favorite midway/fair food?

P.S. I have gone to the Calgary Stampede ever since I was a toddler. The past 6 years I’ve worked for the Agriculture department as an Event Planner and Facility Coordinator. This year, my involvement is much smaller by choice. I’m helping coordinate the Agriculture events in the Saddledome for the first 4 days and being a tourist! As my husband reminds me, I still don’t know how to spend the first couple weeks of July any differently!

It’s really hard to have just a few favorites at CS, but the steer show, rodeo, chuckwagon races, art show and cow friends are all on my list. Along with a drink in Mel’s Place and a bag of mini donuts. If the line isn’t to long then a peek at the Dreamhome too.

Now that we have babies, our favourite is the ag buildings with all the animals…yes they see 100′s of cows at home, but we don’t have chicks, ducks or piggies!!
And my personal favorite is the marketplace…LOVE the displays and products!

I was only ever at the Stampede once a few years back, we went to watch one of our steers in the show and he ended up winning his class. So the steer classic is probably my fav thing at the Calgary Stampede but the rodeo would be a darn close second!
