What I love about it:
Summery and fun! This outfit would compliment any body type. I love the colourful print on the dress with coordinating capri leggings, combined with the natural wood, leather and metal materials in the accessories. While this outfit isn’t overly “western”, the accessories from recognizable brands let you fit in while standing out in any western crowd.

What I love about it:
This top is gorgeous, yet forgiving. For those of us with a little “muffin top”, this flowy, floral blouse provides a little extra room and fabric to camouflage that area. I’ve paired it with some great white capris, but you could just as easily wear shorts, a pencil skirt or pants depending on your body type. The wedge sandals do wonderful things for your calves with a little more stability than heels. Accented with beautiful and unique pearl jewelry, and a tooled leather purse that pulls the green tones from the blouse. A little dressier, you could wear this to a patio party, on a date, or anywhere the dress code calls for a little fancier than “casual”.

Cattlemen’s Young Leaders Development Program Launches Pilot in Alberta
Calgary, AB – The Cattlemen’s Young Leaders (CYL) Development Program officially launched today in Alberta. Application forms for phase one of the CYL program, recently announced by the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), are now available online at www.cattlemensyoungleaders.com. Watch for the official CYL program website, soon to be unveiled at the same link.

The CYL program provides producers between 18 and 35 years of age a combination of formal and informal mentorship opportunities to learn from leaders in the beef cattle industry as well as from other youth organizations with a focus on mentorship.

The CYL program enables participants to explore a potential career choice or involvement with a provincial/national producer organization, while gaining the business connections and acumen required to carry the industry forward.

A total of six producers will participate in the Alberta pilot. In partnership with Summer Synergy, a collaborative venture of the Olds Agricultural Society and the Calgary Stampede to showcase youth in agriculture, two Summer Synergy Scholarship finalists will be selected to participate in the pilot. The deadline for submissions to be considered for the remaining spots in the Alberta pilot is July 30, 2010.

CYL participants will have the opportunity to explore areas of interest from two mentorship programs. The Professional Mentorship Program enables participants to be mentored by a beef-related professional such as a cattle operator, veterinarian or pharmaceutical representative. Under the Industry Leadership Mentorship Program, participants can be mentored by board members or committee chairs from the Alberta Beef Producers or the CCA.

Eligible producers will have a chance to be involved in key discussions at the provincial, national and international level. These discussions define the direction and future of the Canadian cattle and beef industry. Additional opportunities for participants include attending the International Livestock Congress in Calgary August 9-11, and qualifying for the week-long Young Ranchers Program during the National Western Stock show in Denver in January 2011.

Following the completion of the pilot phase, feedback from participants will be compiled and incorporated into a strategic plan that will ensure a successful national roll out of the CYL program in January 2011.

What I like about it:
I like mixing it up. In my own outfits I might wear a hippy-looking peasant top with leggings and cowboy boots. For guys, I just encourage you to be yourself. In this outfit we’re mixing some Hurley with your regular jeans, belt and boots, but you could just as easily rock a sports coat and white T-shirt or an ACDC shirt. Whatever your style and the occasion calls for!

Jessica Simpson is hands down my favorite dressed celebrity, she has that western/urban style down cold!

1) Western Art Showcase - I LOVE this area - the ambiance is fabulous and the displays are world class. Two western inspired displays I enjoy visiting are the ones of Gena Lacoste & Shawna Whiteside (Laura shared a couple of their amazing creations with us in the Just in time for Valentines post) and another one of my favorites is JoAnne Meeker. Last year, this area was redesigned into the Western Oasis and has a wine bar in the middle! (Open all 10 days :: BMO Centre)

2) Steer Show – I was raised showing cattle and attending the Steer Show annually is a huge social opportunity for me to visit with many amazing agriculture enthusiasts. (Saturday, July 17, 2010 :: 2:30pm :: Big Top Tent)

3) Rodeo on the Final Sunday - the top rodeo competitors from the previous 9 days, compete for a $100,000 purse for a 1st place finish!  There is just something about standing on the hot tarmac with a cold one, watching the finals live. (Sunday, July 18, 2010 :: 1:30pm :: Grandstand)

4) Heavy Horse World Champion Six Horse Hitch – it’s SO magical to watch the horses work together, pull the gorgeous wagons and listen to their equipment jingle and feet move along with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. (Sunday, July 11, 2010 :: 12noon :: Pengrowth Saddledome)

5) Stampede Market (Trade Show) – I enjoy browsing the displays for “prizes”. Of course I never go needing anything, however I always seem to leave with something! After browsing THIS list of 2010 Exhibitors – I’m excited to explore the offering. I look forward to visiting the Cowgirl Finesse booth and seeing what other western inspired booths are waiting for me – he he… (Open all 10 days :: BMO Centre)

6) Grandstand Show & Fireworks – the evening show is always fabulous and finishes off with a wicked fireworks show. I really enjoy music and dancing – so I like watching the performance once during the festival.

Last year’s performance featured Suzie McNeil singing Believe; appropriate for the 2010 Winter Olympics that followed a couple months later.

6 ) Eat a Fiddlestick - I love dessert and this just happens to be a fair favorite, I only get once a year!

7) Enjoy a Burrito - from a Mexican vendor on the midway, that has been in the exact same place, as long as I can remember! When I get to Stampede Park – I’ll update you with the name of the vendor and it’s approximate location, so you can also enjoy if you wish.

P.S. I have gone to the Calgary Stampede ever since I was a toddler. The past 6 years I’ve worked for the Agriculture department as an Event Planner and Facility Coordinator. This year, my involvement is much smaller by choice. I’m helping coordinate the Agriculture events in the Saddledome for the first 4 days and being a tourist! As my husband reminds me, I still don’t know how to spend the first couple weeks of July any differently!

What I like about it:
That I would like to see a cowboy in it! I know it’s a little warm for daytime in the summer, but for an evening out – perfect. I love layering in mens wear and the blue-mixed plaid contrasts perfectly with the burnt orange sweater. Great square-toed boots and a flat-top straw hat polish off the look and make it cowboy without being over-the-top western.

Side note:
Please, guys, abide by the universal hat rules. Straw hat from Easter to Labour Day, felt only between Labour Day and Easter. There is the odd occasion in Canada when a felt hat is acceptable outside of that time frame – like a May snowstorm, or a national award presentation – but other than that, keep ‘em for winter. And no straw hats ever in felt-hat season. Thank you for lowering my blood pressure.

This is such a versatile, easy outfit! Fun hat, cute tank, great jeans, and suede fringe purse. Anyone can wear this look.
